Official club of Deer Creek High School

Wrestling starts on day one.

Deer Creek Wrestling Club is the USA Wrestling program for Riverhawk country. We take kids who have never stepped on a mat and turn them into wrestlers — and we take wrestlers and turn them into competitors.

Pick your wrestler's group on the next page — Little Hawks, Elementary, Middle School or High School. Wrestlers in grades 1–12 also need a USA Wrestling membership — club #2600185802.

Who we are

A brand-new program with a very old idea

Deer Creek High School opened its doors in 2026 — the first new high school in Wasatch County in more than a century. This is the wrestling club that grows with it.

Nobody here has "always been a Riverhawk." Every single wrestler in this room is starting something, and that is exactly the point: there is no depth chart to climb over, no clique to break into, and no such thing as being late to the party. The kid who signs up this week is a founding member of this program.

What we borrow from the old idea is simple. Wrestling rewards the person who shows up, works, and does not quit — and it does not care how big, fast, or naturally gifted that person is. That is why we coach it.

Find the right room for your wrestler

Four groups, one club. Wrestlers move up when they are ready — not when a birthday says so.

Little Hawks is our five-week introduction to the sport — a high school fundraiser and feeder program rather than part of the USA Wrestling club season, so there is no membership to buy. Everything from Elementary up is the club proper.

Grades 1–2 can go either way. Little Hawks is the gentler introduction; Elementary is for wrestlers ready to start competing regularly. Not sure? Come to Little Hawks first, or ask a coach.

Never wrestled before?

Here is exactly what the first practice looks like

Most parents worry their kid will be thrown in with someone twice their size on day one. That is not how this works.

You walk in and someone knows your name

A coach meets every new family at the door, introduces your wrestler to two or three teammates their size, and shows you where to sit. Nobody gets left standing at the edge wondering what to do.

Warm-ups that look a lot like recess

Tag games, tumbling, sprawls, and rolls. It burns energy, teaches body control, and — most importantly — teaches kids how to fall without getting hurt.

One move. Taught slowly. Repeated a lot.

New wrestlers learn a single position per practice. Stance one day, a takedown the next. Drilling is done with a partner of similar size and experience, at a speed where nothing goes wrong.

On live wrestling: beginners are never matched against experienced wrestlers who outweigh them. Live goes at the pace the coach sets, and a wrestler who is not ready simply keeps drilling.

They leave tired, sweaty, and wanting to come back

That is the whole goal of week one. Competition, weight classes, and tournaments are conversations for much later — and always optional until your family decides otherwise.

Try it before you commit

Come to a practice and watch, or let your wrestler jump in. Bring shorts, a t-shirt, and a water bottle — that is it. Email us at jacob.salazar@wasatch.edu and we will tell you which night is best for a first-timer.

Why Deer Creek

What you should expect from a wrestling club

01

Certified, background-checked coaches

Every coach on our mat carries a current USA Wrestling coaching membership, SafeSport training, and a background screening. No exceptions, ever.

02

Girls wrestle here

Girls wrestling is the fastest-growing high school sport in the country and a sanctioned Utah state sport. Our girls train in the same room, with the same coaching, and compete in girls brackets.

03

A real path, K through 12

A first grader in Little Hawks and a senior on the varsity ladder are in the same program, learning the same system. That continuity is the entire advantage of a school-affiliated club.

04

Honest talk about weight

We do not cut weight at the youth level. Period. Older wrestlers get real education on fueling and healthy weight management, following USA Wrestling and UHSAA guidance.

05

Competition is optional

Plenty of our wrestlers never enter a tournament, and that is a completely valid way to be part of this club. When a wrestler is ready, we will tell you — and it is still your call.

06

Cost is never the reason a kid sits out

Scholarships and loaner gear are available, quietly and without a process that embarrasses anyone. Ask a coach.

Practice

Where and when we train

We train in the athletic building at Deer Creek High School, 901 W. Riverhawk Rd, Heber City — the separate building just north of the school.

Questions

The things parents actually ask

Is wrestling safe for a young kid?

Wrestling has a lower rate of serious injury than football, hockey, and soccer, largely because there is no ball to chase, no collisions at speed, and no hard surfaces. The first thing we teach — before any move — is how to fall and how to protect your head and neck. Coaches are on the mat, at arm's length, for the entire practice.

My child is small for their age. Will they get crushed?

Wrestling is the one sport built entirely around this problem. Kids drill and compete against opponents in the same weight class, so your wrestler is always paired with someone their own size. Being small is not a disadvantage here — it is just your weight class.

What does it actually cost?

Two things: a USA Wrestling membership (paid to USA Wrestling, required for insurance) and our club fee. Current club fees are listed on the Join page. Scholarships are available — just ask a coach, and it stays between us.

Do we have to go to tournaments?

No. Tournaments are optional at every level of this club. Many wrestlers train all season and never compete, and they are just as much a part of the team. When your wrestler is ready, a coach will let you know — and the decision is still entirely yours.

Can girls wrestle in this club?

Yes, and we want them here. Girls wrestling is a sanctioned UHSAA state sport in Utah and the fastest-growing high school sport in the country. Girls train in the same room with the same coaches, drill with partners their size, and compete in girls-only brackets.
